Don't Look Back!

Once upon a time,

 Andrew had a girlfriend named Samantha. She meant the world to him. Each night he would buy her ice cream at the local shop. Until she passed away one dark and stormy night.

 Apparently, the ice cream cone she ate from had traces of poisoning lodged inside. The poor fella had no choice but to bury her in an open field.

 One night it was pouring. A voice deep inside the cave beckoned young Andrew to embark on a nether journey. Could he have found the Gates of Death-the other side of the grave?

 Come join this neon as he endeavors to retrieve Samantha's soul from the dark fiery taverns of Hades. Be wary of pesky bats, poisonous serpents, and noxious spiders. Watch out for those brutal Hell Hounds and horned devils. They will tear you from limb to limb.

 Use the Arrow Keys to move and jump. The Spacebar to shoot your pistol(trust me your gonna need it). 

 I loved the Atari look and feel to this! The difficulty is at first hard but manageable once seasoned. For those who simply want adventure this might not be your cup of tea. Otherwise Terry Cavanagh did a great job executing a nostalgic platformer!

Frogger

 In 1981, Konami released Frogger in every video arcade across Japan and then the world. It was distributed by Sega for the American market before they developed home consoles years down the road-when they were an arcade joint-venture with Gremlin Industries. Originally the arcade classic was to be dubbed "Highway Crossing Frog" but the guys at Sega said "heck no"!  In no time did Frogger become an instant coin-op success right on up there with Pacman, Asteroids, and Space Invaders!

Frogger Gameplay

 Like it's cabinet companion, you must hop each frog across rush hour traffic, over the river upon floating logs and lily pads(or turtles), right on up into their homes at the top of your screens. Watch out for munching alligators, hissing snakes, and voluptuous otters. Nevermind being splattered by a speeding Semi or SUV!  For extra points, do snake on a few flies or even better: Escort a damsel(Purple Lady Frog) across the river. You've only got so much time to bring each frog(five in all) safely nestled home. Good luck and may the frogs smile upon you!

Although the screen is a bit small compared to it's arcade counterpart, gameplay otherwise conforms to the classic in every way! Even the sound effects are identical. Overall, I give this classic 4.9 stars!

Drink Beer, Neglect Family

Do you feel that drinking your troubles away will solve all your problems???

  Think again!

 Many a family has been torn asunder by the ravages of drunkenness and alcoholism. Among other evils. Sometimes folks can't help it(mental illness). Other times chronic miscommunication and disunion within the family tempts one to find an easy fix. Then there are those who just love to relish in the lifestyle until it is too late.

 Unfortunately, this fella has chosen the easy rout of instant gratification. All his personal issues have driven him to the draught. Now he must face the music and deal with the consequences of his actions. Use the Arrow Keys to walk on platforms and climb ladders(to consume another beer and avoid mental pics of his family) and the Z Key to hop. Your goal is to ignore your conscience and imbibe each glass of beer that happens to show up. Just don't be surprised with the affects.

Review of Drink Beer Neglect Family

 I loved the retro look and feel throughout. Though I'm not sure if the developer was glorifying or simply demonstrating the ill effects of being drunk and unable to function as a moral lesson(I vouch for the latter). Otherwise, this would make a great arcade hit around 1980!

#2 Spooky Block-Out

 Next on my list comes a classic Halloween-themed Wipe-Out! Just like it's counterpart, you must paddle your slimy ball to hit the skeletal blocks and prevent it from going gutter-ball. As with all dinosaur video games, the points really do matter!

#3 Skeleton Cannon

 Now here, things get a little interesting. You must shoot and see how far your bony friend makes it before tumbling upon the hard dry ground. Watch out for prickly fences and sharp tombstones. But pray that you might land on a trampoline to give a boost. And one more thing. Pay no regard to the hoary narrator.:)

#4 Return To Halloween Escape

 Just when you thought it was safe to go trick-or-treating! Apparently, the spirits have kidnapped you and many others before(now deceased). Even a boy who disappeared three Halloween's ago died of poisoning in the attic. You must solve the puzzles and sort through all this mess or else you'll become the next casualty of Crickety Lane!

Super Size Mario Brothers

 An epidemic has reached The Mushroom Kingdom! This is no joke. Ever since they've installed a McDonald's in every block(pun intended), the koopas just can't get enough Happy Meals to consume! Now everyone is quite literally a blob! Even Mario can't get enough of those Big Macs. His feet are a distant memory!

 Introducing Clinically Obese SMB! Gameplay is pretty much like it's regular cousin except everything is...well super sized. One good thing about all this is that Mario is immune to everything because of his weight. Until it comes time to rescue the princess(oh dear).

 This game is comical and has a few hilarious moments. I wish there were more gameplay and length to the script. However the comical aspect will make this worth your 5 minutes!

The Adventures of One Button Bob

 Bob is on a quest for some rare antiques. First, he must perforate through a subterranean wilderness filled with lava pits and blood-sucking bats. In addition to stealthy traps and a green slimy boss at the end with an inferiority complex!

 Left-clicking on your mouse is all you need to get through these pixel corridors. Timing and experience are essential. Within each screen you'll be doing something different with your mouse. But give or take a few shots(and lives), you'll have it in no time.

Review of One Button Bob

The gameplays simplicity coupled with the retro graphics and animation sure make Bob a nostalgic wonder of yesteryear. On an overchallenging/too easy scale, I'd give this a 4 or a 6 out of 10. The game is fairly easy and straight-forward. Yet challenging nonetheless. The music only adds an extra flavor to Bob's Commodore appeal.

 So if your looking for a simple one-click excavation through a retrospective underground wilderness, then look no furthar my friend!

Pacman Turns 30!

 For 30 years, this muncher has thrilled the lives of countless addicts seeking an adrenaline rush. Weather on your PC or from a yellow pill cabinet at the video arcade, Pac-man has never ceased to draw a following!

 In honor of this Puck-Munching mascot, Komix has successfully spun-off a parody with a few twists which are quite different from the original.

 Although still from a two-dimensional perspective, Pac(and his nemesis) are noticeably much more animated. His enemies are more arachnid then phantom-like(even shooting a little red-shedded knee). The music is much more upbeat and modern.

 Controlling Mr. Pac-Man is simple and to the point. Just steer the mouse in the direction desired-Eating all the pills in front of him. Try to lure his foes to the yellow dots. They will explode right in their faces. The main objective is to score as many points possible.

What better way is there to celebrate Pacman's 30th Anniversary then to revel with a clone!

Hey, It's Super Mario Flash Everybody!

 "I'm sorry. But our Princess is in another castle." If that doesn't bring back memories of a bygone era then either you were living under a rock or never bothered to play a video game in the 80's or 90's.

 As usual, Mario's arch nemesis has stolen the maid during the night watches(either she was teasing "come and get me" or the guards on duty slumbered around the courtyard as usual). And you, a knight in shining armour. You Mario, must save this damsel from the clutches of King Koopa. His domain is straddled upon an island full of magma and tar pits(where else does he dwell).

 But before you attempt to barge into his fiery lair, there is more then meets the eye. The malevolent turtle has once again unleashed his minions who've since invaded the outskirts of the Toadstoolian Kingdom.

 You must journey through nine levels before even thinking about setting foot in Bowser's palace-the final showdown! Press the Arrow Keys to walk, duck, and jump. Use the Space Bar to shoot those signature fireballs(when applicable). As with any well-done Mario game, the classic mushroom and tulip can always be found hidden within those golden question boxes. And did I mention collecting coins and jumping on a high-striker? Now there's no teddybears involves, but you will always score more points.

 Overall, the graphics and animation are exactly what you'd expect from a standard Mario game. Even the music will chariot you through memory lane. Nothing but crisp soundtracks of renown Mario themes from the golden days of Super Nintendo! Other then the near-impossibility of turtle-squashing over steep cliffs, the developer has molded together a marvelous artifact I am not ashamed to call "Super Mario Flash"!

Duck Hunt

 Ahh...Where did the time go. When 8 bits were all you had and Robbie was your best friend? Those tangerine guns Nintendo gave us were far superior to the Magnavox Odyssey or even Atari 2600. Just typing about this gives me a burst of nostalgia.

 Today, I have a special treat for you. An NES filler that's been peripheral to every edition of Super Mario Brothers. If you've guessed "Duck Hunt", My golly you're right!

 I may not have that gun you always adored, but I will guarantee the mouse works just as fine. Just point-and-click at your target praxis. Make sure you shoot all ducks as quickly as possible. But use your bullets wisely as you only have 3 per round. Rover the dog will finish them off in the bushes.

Panic Breakout

Panic Breakout!

 "Panic Breakout" is a modern retro-styled reinterpretation of the classic game we all grew-up loving. Produced by Taro Ito-A Japanese flash game developer who works for Gamedesign.

 Basically, it's what you'd expect from a traditional Break-Out game except for a few twists and turns bells and whistles.

 An oriental smiley(as opposed to a stick) is playing hockey against a bunch of bricks in black and white(needless to say, everything smiles at you in an oriental restaurant).

 All you need is a mouse and good hand-eye coordination. As with all Break-Outs, your goal is to destroy all bricks with your dot to proceed to the next course. Be sure to collect those hearts, P's, stars, and Roman numerals those bricks might throw at you. But steer clear of gas masks(they shrink your little smiley).

 I can't tell you how many levels there are as I've only made it to the 6th course. But I'm sure you will if you keep at it. Good luck!

Panic Breakout Review

 The soundtracks give you a taste of Japanese pixel sound tracking for video games(where Super Mario Bros. was born). Combine that with a simplistically artistic black and white platform and you've got a rendition which quintessentially does justice to the original Break-Out series! My hat goes off to Taro Ito for a well done job in reinterpreting an age-old classic!

Mickey Mousecapades

 Tonight's review brings us to an old classic I'm sure you'll remember. "Mickey Mousecapades", an 8-bit 2D platforming adventure. Released in 1987 as a joint-venture between Disney and Hudson Bay(a.k.a. Capcom).

You must journey through many lands of ferocious monsters, flying fishies, zippity broomsticks, and dodge falling shandleers. Many infamous villains from Disney have made a pact to destroy all that is good. You are on a mystery quest-trying to get to the bottom of all this as you prowl your way through "The Fun House", "A pirate ship", "Ocean Land", and many other worlds full of serendipity. Look for hidden gems to equip yourself with shooting stars and keys to unlock a door unto the next level.

 Be sure to anchor yourself firmly after hopping between platforms(you don't want to kill your mate Minnie now. do you?). Remember, they're engaged. When one jumps, the other goes in right after em. Good luck on your mission and may the gods of Eisner smile upon you.

Mickey Mousecapades Review

 If they'd just tweak the sound track a bit. That would be great. It's a snap, crackle, and pop stigma. But otherwise, Virtual NES does a wonderful job executing old classics like these!

Mario Forever Flash

 It's time for Mario to strap a wrench on his side and jump into those signature overalls. Because the Princess has let herself get kidnapped again(sometimes you wander. Does she do this on purpose?). Bowser will never learn from his mistakes. As Thomas Edison put it eloquently...

"Those who make the same mistakes expecting a different outcome are truly insane."

 But oh, the things we do for love. If it wasn't for her sweet smile or pretty face, he would of thrown in the towel many years ago. But as it stands now, both are fortunate to sit on thrones and rule over a bunch of Mushroom-Heads.

 Long ago, this antagonist once hailed as a good king from the land of the Troopa's. Yet a fierce fall-out left him to betray Peach's father(the king) and rebel against what later became known as Mario Land. Bowser founded his own kingdom underground. Many troopa's followed his disastrous course(which is why we started naming him King Koopa). A minority of turtles however, did not turn evil(including our beloved Koopa-Troopa). Fearing for their very lives, they quickly escaped up to the Mushroomian Kingdom. These two kingdoms have been in constant rivalry ever since.

 But as soon as Mario won the trust of Mr. Toadstool and his wife, he gave the Princess(Peach) to him in marriage. Laying on him the keys to the kingdom. Yet even he could not get rid of this terd. Every time Mario or his brother defeated him, he'd sooner or later popped out of nowhere. Due to the artists conflict of interest, Bowser will never be terminated. No matter what "The Capped One" does, he will always come back for another match. But so is everyone in Mario Land. Call it a blessing or a curse, The Mario Brothers are all built to be immortal.

Mario Forever Flash Review

 A fantastic rendition of a Super Mario game from the Super Nintendo era(SNES). From the background-graphics, sound-effects, and 2D side-scrolling. The very specimen of Mario Land in 16-bits! However, I think the controls should of been confined simply to the Arrows and Spacebar. W-A-S-D may do, but most folks associate maneuvering and jumping with Up-Down-Right-Left and Space. There's an internet acronym going around which pretty much sums up my advise-KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid). But to be fair, Softendo has done an outstanding job and in my opinion has over delivered on their product-Mario Forever Flash!

Asteroids

 Like "Space Invaders", "Asteroids" was considered an arcade revolution around the turn of the 80's. Even though the former won the race fair and square, they were both programmed out of squiggly lines-the stuff computers were made of back in the day. Lyle Rains(the man behind the Atari giant) had this to say about it...

 "I guess the way I describe it is that I'm the father of Asteroids. Ed Logg is the mother of Asteroids, because he had to live with it for nine months and deliver a finished product. All I had to do was to provide a seed."

Game play

 Just like it's offline equivalent, you must shoot a bunch of asteroid stick figures and hope that an occasional flying saucer comes by and offers you more points. Large asteroids will break into smaller chunks. So be sure to strike more then once. For reference, I will post a legend just below the review. May the force be with you.

Asteroids Review(Online Edition)

 In no way does this divert from the original 1979 edition(unless you were looking for a dusty arcade cabinet with those famous squiggly glitches). I am impressed by it's faithful preservation and hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

Zelda Invaders 2

 As a follow-up to "Zelda Invaders" I now give you part 2. Brought to you by JP Productions.

 As if one battle weren't enough, Ganondorf now challenges Link to another fight to what he refers to as "the old fashioned way". The Great Deku Tree bids him further to destroy every last one of them until Hyrule is at peace from all sides. From now on, The Gerardo Valley Desert will be delegated a king with sterling character. No longer will Gannon deceive each passing generation with smooth and flattering lips. This time he'll be locked up in the realm of time for eternity.

Zelda Invaders 2 Review

 This time around, Link is showing off what he has with two soundtracks from his catalog. Yet out of respect for "Space Invaders", he hasn't bothered tampering with the sound-effects(such a good boy). In some ways, Zelda Invaders has improved from part one. However, I wish JP used a few more music files instead of just two. But otherwise they did great(especially with the introduction).

Ultimate Sonic Game

 In a land far far away lies South Island. Occupied by four ruddy hogs. There names respectively were Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Cream(of whom became Sonic's lover). Together they lived off the fat of the island. Until the evil prince intruded and turned every inhabitant against them!

 Dr. Robonik has arrived and has released his minions throughout the six zones to extort the island from the dream team. After working many years to pay this island off, there's no way Sonic will just watch him take it away.

 Now is your chance to help these four hedgehogs destroy the evil Dr. Robonik and restore South Island back to it's vibrant self. Go through loop-de-loos, bang through walls, bounce on springboards, do whatever you have and bring an end to Dr. Robonik haughty stare. Your plot of land is counting on you.

Ultimate Sonic Review

 This most certainly feels like a game right out of Sega Genesis! Everything from the superior graphics, top-notch quality, upbeat music, clear sound effects, awesome stunts, and platforming are very much the way we first came to learn about this 16-bit gaming thing! But at the same token, all platforms are fairly unique! The difficulty is not so bad either(in fact I think it's just right). Which by the way is why Sonic is right behind Mario. So, if your looking for the greatest online rendition to Sonic The Hedgehog, I've got you covered!

Tecmo Bowl

 The year was 1987 when Teckno Bowl stormed to an arcade near you(I figured since it's the Superbowl Weekend, I'd share something relevant)! Before, Tecmo was just a Japanese mini-conglomerate, finding a niche most suitable for themselves. But by the 1980's, they found that niche and released about a handful of fairly successful tittles like "Tecmo Wrestling" and "Tecmo Bowl".

 It wouldn't be until 1989 they would release a home consul version for Nintendo called "Tecmo Super Bowl" which would bring them fame as the fist in a series of NFL franchise plus the first video game to ever have real logos and characters. For just a brief period, Tecmo was considered to be at it's peak. Yet as the wise would most eloquently affirm, "All thing's must pass".

 By the mid-late 90's the industry started to change and shirt focus.Whoever did not keep up either went bankrupt or never quite reached their former success(e.g. Michael Jackson with Thriller). Tecmo was no different. Yet to this day, they are still making gobs of cash with Nintendo and Xbox(Tecmo Bowl Kickoff). My only objection would be there questionable employee treatment(though I don't know the details quite yet).

 The 43ed Superbowl will be aired across the world Sunday Night! Why not get into the spirit with "Tecmo Bowl"! Though don't be surprised to find yourself playing the 21st Superbowl!

 I did find the sound quality a bit off. But other then that, NESCafe has done a terrific job emulating something from a home consul. If it wasn't for Virtual NES and NESCafe, Super Mario Brothers would never make it in good quality online.
