Ghosts'N Goblins

A screen shot of the original 1985 video game Ghosts n Goblins! #Nintendo #VideoGames
Continuing on our Halloween theme, I thought I'd give you something special on the Eve of Halloween.

Ghosts N Goblins is a classic 8-bit Halloween platformer. Developed by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985.

Your wife's been kidnapped by a deranged bat...Seriously! As you run after this demonic bird, suddenly a warp opens up and takes you to a land of cryptic enchantment and the walking dead. In chivalric fashion, you garb yourself in knight's shining Armour and prepare yourself for battle. But it ain't all glamour and glitz.

As a matter of fact, it's all rotten and gloomy! You are in the midst of the valley of terror(at least that's what locals tell you)-a land of darkness and melancholy-of spine-chilling frightful paranoia. To your utter surprise, your in Hades...the realm of the dead. The abode of zombies and monsters!

Trod your way through haunting graveyards and vampire bats unto the den of the ravenous arch-enemy(the one who stole your wife). Watch out for the living dead! One touch will leave you skimping about in your undies.

Don't let this adulterer have his bloody way with the love of your life! Rescue this damsel in distress, and save yourselves from this perverse plain of existence!

Ghosts N Goblins Flash Review

You know as much as I do that there's nothing like good old fashioned Nintendo(especially one themed after Halloween). On a few exceptions, these blow-hard antiques were all we had! Yet on this Virtual Console Edition, mistakes are glaring!

For one thing, the Shift key ain't no place for him to jump. Never mind getting an intrusive computer message(you have hit the shift key more than 5 times), most gamers associate jumping with the "Space" or the "A" Key.

Don't jump in front of a tombstone. You have to back up to give doofus a chance. But who has adequate time with zombies closing in on you? Last but not least, you only have 4 miserable lives before you join the chorus of the dead(trust me, they go fast)!

Now the music and soundtrack was gothically intriguing and Halloweenish! The characters are graphically detailed considering when the game came out in 1985. All in all, take it as a good dose of nostalgia before heading out to do some Trick-Or-Treating.

Ratings: 4.0 Stars!

By the way, Ghouls N' Ghosts and Super Ghouls N' Ghosts are follow-ups to this series. You can download them at the highlighted links above. But you'll have to buy "Ultimate Ghosts N' Goblins". Just released on August 3, 2006.

Now go Play the original Ghosts N Goblins!
